Long, thick or curly hair can take longer to check, but it does not require cutting. Working patiently in small sections helps you examine the hair more systematically.

Make a careful check easier

  • Choose a comfortable, well-lit place and keep a fine-tooth comb and clips nearby.
  • Gently detangle the hair first if needed. Follow the treatment label about whether hair should be wet or dry and whether conditioner may be used.
  • Divide hair into small sections. Comb each section from near the scalp through to the ends, following the comb or product directions.
  • Clean the comb as directed between passes. Take breaks if the child becomes uncomfortable.
  • Recheck at the timing recommended for the specific product.

Do not use oils as a replacement for an approved treatment without professional advice. See the CDC’s guidance on using lice medicine and our product-use information.

This is general educational information, not a diagnosis. Follow the current product label and ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure.
